Based in Victoria, BC, Canada, Onur Seemann Consulting, Inc. specializes in earthquake hazard assessment, catastrophe risk estimation and disaster risk management. The two principal consultants, Drs. Onur and Seemann, work with associates to address challenges and provide robust solutions to their clients. They continue to be actively engaged in research, teaching, training, and supervising graduate research.

Tuna Onur, Ph.D.

PRINCIPAL

Dr. Onur is a catastrophe risk consultant specializing in the modelling and communication of seismic hazard, structural vulnerabilities and financial losses both nationally and internationally. She has over 25 years of experience in all aspects of earthquake risk estimation and currently serves on the National Building Code of Canada’s Standing Committee on Earthquake Design. Her professional experience includes both private and public sector positions as earthquake hazard researcher, as lead earthquake modeller, and as a subject matter expert advising engineering firms, governments, the insurance industry and financial regulatory agencies. Dr. Onur is also involved in various capacity building initiatives integrating probabilistic seismic hazard assessment in the Middle East, Caucasus and Central Asia. She teaches earthquake engineering at the University of Victoria and continues to be actively involved in seismic risk research.

Mark Seemann, Ph.D., ARM, CEM

PRINCIPAL

Dr. Seemann is a disaster risk manager with over 25 years experience in public safety. His work centres on strengthening individual and community resilience through the comprehensive management of disaster risk exposures. He has worked for provincial/state and national governments in Canada and the United States, and brings extensive private and public sector operational, policy and planning experience to local, national and international risk reduction initiatives. Dr. Seemann’s work also focuses on individual preparedness and crisis management. He has taught at the University of Alberta, Royal Roads University, and the University of Victoria, and continues to promote disaster research and initiatives in earthquake risk, risk perception and disaster risk management at the University of Victoria.

Carlos Herrera, Ph.D.

SENIOR SEISMOLOGIST
Dr. Herrera is a Geophysicist specializing in earthquake seismology. His research includes seismic source modelling and strong ground motion characterization. He has collaborated with seismologists and earth scientists across the Americas, Europe, and Asia.  Dr. Herrera is currently involved in a variety of national and international seismic hazard projects, including the preparation and analysis of seismological and strong motion data; the characterization of seismicity; and, the design of training workshops on related topics.  He teaches Introductory Geophysics at the University of Victoria, and continues research activities in both earth sciences and engineering.
